Under My Skin - Benny Garcia

Frozen by a mere question. My stiffening posture aching my tendons.

The kind of fear that comes from the gashes on your ankles

And unravels you from the inside out.

The kind of fear that strangles you with your own spit.

Words fester and bubble in the back of my throat, a response clawing its way out.

Screeching for an audience.

He swallows the shards,

Bleeding from the scrapes on his neck.

His smile caked in fresh blood,

Intention now drowned out by a laugh and a tilted head.

Next time,

He tells me,

Certainly next time

Benny is a queer creator looking to brush up and sharpen her poetry. After hanging up her pen in pursuit of professional development, she’s ready to let blood and sweat turn to ink once again. In between working in education, working on sound design projects, and playing fighting games, she’s foraging for any spark to inspire her next work.
