Notes on sustaining joy - Katie Banville

Joy pockets

Kept hidden

The insides of coats, the folds of skirts

Sewn into lining, tucked into trim

Where no hands except mine can find them

Safe

From tiny groping fingers

From obliterative missiles

of obligation and responsibility

From the drag of the pessimistic,

the hateful, the jaded

Kept secret

Too small to be detected by those ready to pounce and plunder

Big enough to keep the car running on empty

Precious pockets of joy

That are all mine

Kathleen (Katie) Banville is a theatre artist and educator, mom to small children, and lifelong San Diego resident. She started as a musical theatre performer and later moved into choreographing and directing, working at local theatres such as La Jolla Playhouse, The Old Globe, Moonlight Amphitheatre, Diversionary, Backyard Renaissance, and Cygnet Theatre, where she's a Resident Artist. She currently leads the Theatre Arts Department at Grossmont College, where her students keep her honest and inspired. She's survived this long thanks to an enduring sense of humor in all things, shared by her husband, kids, and dearest friends.
